This past weekend, I stepped into a world of wonder at Zona Maco Art Week, one of the most celebrated international art fairs that draws awe-struck attendees to discover artists from across the globe. For 20 years, this illustrious event has been lighting up Mexico City annually, infusing the historic streets with intrigue. The main exhibit unfolds in the sprawling CitiBanamex center, a vast space buzzing with artistic energy on the edge of Colonia Lomas. But Zona Maco extends beyond the convention halls – it takes over the entire city for Mexico City Art Week! Galleries throw open their doors, studios welcome curious eyes, and the homes of local artists and collectors transform into impromptu galleries. During this magical time, creativity spills onto the streets, and you can feel the inspirational spirit of Mexico City’s art scene coming alive.
You may recall my previous blog about the Laguna Factory in Mexico City. (read more about it HERE) The former textile mill has been turned into a somewhat secretive creative space in Colonia Doctores. I popped in to see some local art, as Laguna presented the fourth edition of its contemporary art and crafts fair Art Week, Laguna 2024 . The collective exhibition for Art Week included several artists from the local Mexico City Art Scene.
If you consider yourself an art aficionado, I highly recommend a visit to Mexico City during the lively Zona Maco Art Week. As art enthusiasts from around the globe flock to the city, an electric energy buzzes through the streets. The 2024 festival hosted over 200 galleries spanning 25 countries, including art powerhouses like Germany, Spain, the U.S., Japan, and the U.K.
Zona Maco resembles most major art fairs, with an expo hall packed with gallery presentations showcasing paintings, sculptures, and media in a traditional format. Beverage carts are easy to find roaming around the fair, serving cocktails on curated little carts so you can enjoy a refreshment as you stroll throughout the fair. Beyond the expo, intimate art events scattered throughout the city are worth exploring for a more personal experience.
To fully appreciate Zona Maco’s vibrant art scene, visit during the week-long festivities. The event takes place annually in February, and the city transforms into a cosmopolitan hub filled with inspired art lovers from every corner of the world!
