A big highlight on my recent visit to Hong Kong was visiting the M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Since opening its doors in November 2021, M+ has captivated global audiences with its kaleidoscopic collections. These works, gathered from Hong Kong and beyond, traverse diverse visual art forms – from the static beauty of paintings and sculptures to the kinetic marvels of design, architecture and moving image. Step into M+ and embark on a sensory journey through the dynamic landscapes of modern creativity. Lose yourself in the limitless colors, textures and visions of the contemporary arts across Asia and the world over. M+ is more than a museum; it is a portal into the pulsing heart of global visual culture today.
Designed by the renowned team of Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and Arup, the M + building features 33 galleries across 65,000 square meters, making ample room for visitors to explore different exhibits. The second floor is home to 17,000 square meters of interconnected galleries that let you fluidly wander from one artwork to the next. And the tower? Its concrete and ceramic tile exterior dances in the light, while at night an LED light show transforms the facade into a canvas of color. The building’s inside and out work together to create an eye-catching addition to Hong Kong’s skyline that brings people together through creativity and culture.
M+ is more than a typical museum with cool architecture. This place brings majorly fresh ideas about how to show art and put together collections. While old-school museums focus on exhibiting, collecting, and analyzing, M+ is all about getting visitors to interact creatively. They’ve got an artist square where anyone can participate and connect, which gives a whole new spin on contemporary art. The stuff they collect goes way beyond the usual paintings and sculptures too. We’re talking visual culture – popular stuff, internet memes, tech-y and digital works. They even highlight Hong Kong’s distinct local visual culture, with sketches, graphic designs, albums, posters, video games…you name it. So M+ is really reimagining what a museum can be. The architecture’s still awesome, but it’s not just a place to walk around and look. It’s about getting involved, connecting, and keeping an open mind.
