The New Taiwan dollar TWD has been the currency of the island of Taiwan since 1949, when it replaced the old Taiwan dollar.

Currency exchange counters at TPE airport charge a fee, so it’s better to use the ATM machines.  Taiwan Taoyuan Airport offers a variety of ATMs for travelers’ convenience. One option is the Mega Commercial Bank ATM, located in Terminal 1-1F pre-security area. This ATM is easily accessible, as it is situated after baggage processing, near the duty-free shop service counter, and adjacent to the National Immigration Agency branch. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Confirm with your bank in advance, and inform them about international travel to avoid account issues.

It is strongly recommended that you purchase an EasyCard.  The EasyCard is a contactless smartcard for payment on the Taipei Metro, buses, and other public transport services in Taipei since June 2002, and its usage has since expanded to multiple kinds of businesses.  You can purchase the Easy Card at the Airport, Subway Stations, and Convenience Stores.  Easy Cards must be loaded and topped up with cash.
