La Laguna is a charming former textile and yarn factory that has quite some history! It was built in the 1920’s in the Doctores Colonia in Mexico City. The textile and lace factory, originally named La Barmenia, was built on a 4,500m² plot by a German family. It continued to run successfully for decades but economic conditions and new clothing brands made it apparent that change would be necessary for the factory to keep up….
La Laguna played an important role during Mexico City’s 1985 earthquake. The nearby Colonia of Roma was devastated and La Laguna was the only property with running water; during the chaos, it was used as a shelter and a service center. One of the aims of Laguna México is to draw on these community memories, and create new ones!
Productora, an architecture firm based in Mexico City, has turned the formerly rundown factory into a vibrant and creative complex. Today, this space is home to more than 25 incredibly successful firms, including architecture studios, a gallery, a felt and textile workshop, LIGA, and more. The complex has also welcomed new additions, such as a bookshop, a school, Mubi’s main Mexican office, and a project of artistic residences.
To add to the charm of La Laguna, there is a cafe by local roasters, Buna Coffee, facing the courtyard where you can unwind and enjoy a cup of coffee or a snack. Check out Buna’s Instagram page for additional details.
Productora had a long-term plan to gradually transform the space over a decade with the help of flexible tenants who could utilize it at the same time. It’s inspiring to witness how this decaying factory has evolved into an incredible creative hub for individuals from diverse fields.
La Laguna is currently open to the public Monday through Friday from 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-5pm. Though the exterior doors remain locked at all times, a friendly guard is waiting to greet you at the side door located at Calle D. Erazo 172 (shown below) Once inside, you’ll be asked to sign in on an iPad and share a few details before gaining access to this beautiful renovation and creative hub!
