This past weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Casa Wabi Mexico City, a place of true inspiration. Its name, Wabi-Sabi, is rooted in Japanese philosophy and it truly lives up to this ideal by finding beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and the unconventional. The Casa Wabi Foundation has a mission focused on advancing social development through the arts, and they achieve this through five incredible programs: residencies, exhibitions, clay, films, and their mobile library. With locations in Japan, Puerto Escondido, and Mexico City, Casa Wabi is spreading their passion for art and social development across the globe.
Casa Wabi Foundation’s new space in Mexico City blends in with its industrial surroundings with a discreet brick and concrete facade. The site includes a central patio, hosting a small cafe and is surrounded by two structures, one containing a gallery, offices, and an exhibition terrace. The other, a studio for the foundation’s artist-founder, Bosco Sodi, includes a transparent freight elevator, spacious areas for artwork, and carefully-designed lighting.
Casa Wabi’s Architect, Alberto Kalach is a revolutionary architect in Mexico who has left a mark on the industry with his creativity and deep understanding of nature. Casa Wabi, is just one of his many masterpieces, and is a blend of precision, craft, and beauty. Kalach’s firm, Taller de Arquitectura X, has earned a reputation in Mexico and beyond for carving out expressive and refined masonry. His passion for structure, tectonics, and nature results in projects that are both elegant and sophisticated.
