zaha hadid's dongdaemun design plaza
seoul, south korea

As I was planning my latest trip to Seoul, South Korea, exploring the Dongdaemun Design Plaza was at the top of my must-see list! This ultra-modern cultural center, designed by the legendary Architect Zaha Hadid, is one of the coolest spots in the historic Dongdaemun district.  With its swooping curves and smooth silver facade floating above the ground, the DDP building totally lives up to its nickname – the “Spaceship on Earth.” I just had to see Zaha’s futuristic vision in person! Wandering around the plaza and snapping pics of the mind-bending architecture was a highlight of my time in Seoul. The DDP is a must-visit for any design lover visiting Korea’s capital.

what to see and do at ddp

DDP is a complex cultural space located at Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station. Since opening on March 21, 2014, DDP has hosted various cultural events, including various exhibitions, fashion shows, new product launches, forums, and conferences. DDP is a place where design trends begin and cultures exchange. It is operated with content that promotes the world’s first new products and fashion trends, shares knowledge through new exhibitions, and allows for a variety of design experiences. During my visit, the museum was in the process of setting up a new Stefan Sagmeister installation, “NOW IS BETTER” Through these activities, DDP will serve as a transmission center for the design and fashion industry heading to Asia and the world.

About the architecture

DDP was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.  Zaha was a trailblazer in the world of architecture. She broke barriers as the first female architect to receive the prestigious Pritzker Prize.  DDP is one of her most iconic designs.

With its flowing, futuristic forms, the DDP adds a touch of imagination to the historic Dongdaemun district. Zaha embraced the area’s rich culture and aimed to design a space where past and future harmoniously meet. She crafted curved walls that sweep across the landscape, almost like a dancing ribbon. Inside, nature blends seamlessly with modern architecture to create an oasis in the city.

Zaha’s innovative spirit shines through in each slope and curve of the DDP. As dawn fades to dusk, the building transforms – a dynamic chameleon. Her design gifts Dongdaemun with a new identity while still honoring its roots. The DDP is a testament to Zaha’s creativity and vision to push boundaries. Its fluid shapes inspire awe and serve as a friendly welcome to visitors from near and far.
