During my trip planning for Brazil, I was thrilled to discover that Viator offered an Architecture Tour of Brasilia! I chose the “Civil, Legal and Architectural City Tour”, which allows you to explore stunning landmarks for about 4 hours. As soon as decided on a trip to Brazil, I knew I had to include a visit to the Capital of Brasilia and explore the magic of world-renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer! I fell in love with Niemeyer’s work, back in school and was always fascinated by the concept of creating an entire city from scratch.
History of Brasilia
The Capital of Brazil used to be in Rio de Janiero, but in 1761 they had the idea to move it to the interior of Brazil, away from the Atlantic Ocean. Brasilia was built in just 5 years from 1956 to 1960 under the presidency of Juscelino Kubitschek. The city’s modern and artistic plan by Lúcio Costa and striking buildings by Oscar Niemeyer are a stunning example of Brazilian Modern Architecture. Upon completion, the Brazilian Capital was thought of as a modern utopia that showed trust in the future!
